Descanso Gardens
1418 Descanso Drive
La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011
818.949.4200
Web Site

Before the area was opened to the public as Descanso Gardens the land was an oak forest. In the late 1930s and 1940s, when newspaper publisher E. Manchester Boddy was building his estate called Rancho del Descanso, he planted thousands of camellias in the shade of the oaks to provide blossoms for the cut-flower industry. Those camellias, and others added in later years, continue to thrive.

Today Descanso Gardens is home to North America's largest camellia collection-more than 34,000 plants and more than 700 species and varieties growing on 20 acres. Many of these camellias are more than 20 feet in height. The Camellia Forest boasts rare and familiar camellias and has been designated an International Camellia Garden of Excellence by the International Camellia Society.

CASA ADOBE DE SAN RAFAEL HISTORY
" Casa Adobe de San Rafael is registered as California Landmark #235.
" The casa is believed to have been built in 1865 by Tomas Sanchez, and has a New England style of architecture.
" In 1875, the property was sold, left abandoned, and fell into a ruinous state.
" In 1930 the Casa was purchased by the California Medicinal Wine Company who planned to tear down the structure and to remove the large eucalyptus trees on the property. Local neighbors and community members stopped the demolition and began a campaign to preserve the house as a historic landmark.
" The City of Glendale purchased the adobe in 1930, and by 1932 La Casa de Adobe de San Rafael was completely refurbished.
" Today, the adobe includes a Monterey-style corridor (covered porch), beautiful sunken garden, brick patio, gray shake roof, and long narrow front windows adorned with green shutters. Interior furnishings are from the 19th century.

CATALINA VERDUGO ADOBE HISTORY
" The Catalina Verdugo Adobe is registered as California Historical Land Mark #637 and the California Parlor #247.
" The adobe is believed to have been built in 1828 and originally consisted of the main room and the south wing. The north wing of the adobe was added around the turn of the century.
" The dwelling was named after Jose Maria Verdugo's daughter and built by his son, Teodoro Verdugo.
" After a series of ownership changes, the property was sold to land developer, F.P. Newport. Newport knew of the historical value of the adobe and was careful to preserve it.
" The property was later sold to Dr. Ernest Bashor and remained in the Bashor family until it was sold to the City of Glendale in 1989.
" The adobe includes a rustic covered porch, brick patio, and wooden picnic tables. "OAK OF PEACE" HISTORY
" The tree was named the "Oak of Peace" in 1847.
" Jesus Pico, representing Lieutenant Colonel Fremont and the United States met with his brother, General Andres Pico, commander of the Mexican army on the Verdugo Adobe property in January 1847, and recommended that they surrender to the Unity States due to the size and strength of Fremont's Army.
" Terms of the surrender were discussed and agreed upon under the large oak located 30 yards from the Adobe.
" The actual signing of the treaty came two days later, near what is now the Hollywood Bowl.
" Many consider the "Oak of Peace" to be the birthplace of California.
" Although the tree died from natural causes in 1987, remnants can still be seen at its original site.

The San Gabriel Mission Arcángel, which was established on September 8, 1771. The mission is rich in the history and traditions of early California. San Gabriel Mission Arcángel was the fourth of 21 California missions founded. In the early mission era, it grew into a mission called the "Pride of the Missions," for its large production of crops and trading of cattle hides and wine. Some of this history has been preserved for viewing in the church, museum, and grounds.

MISSION ARCÁNGEL CHURCH
The mission church was built of cut stone, brick, and mortar from 1791 to 1805, and it is the oldest structure of its kind south of Monterey, CA. From 1987 to 1993, the mission was fully restored to repair damage from the 1987 Whittier earthquake.

MISSION MUSEUM
The museum building was constructed in 1812 of adobe brick with a tiled roof. Originally, it was used as sleeping quarters for the mission fathers, and for storing books, some dating back to the early 1500s.
